"Strengthened by the Word of God
and by our communion with each other,
let us have the courage
to go beyond our borders
and, with Angela
to be signs of reconciliation
and of hope."
General Chapter Statement 2007

As Australian Ursulines we have a long and rich heritage, stretching back over more than 450 years to St Angela Merici.

We are also shaped by the spirit of our land, Australia. The influence of this land has been captured in the tapestry which was designed and worked for the celebration of the Centenary of the formation of the Roman Union of Ursulines, in 2000

This tapestry attempts to capture the sense that Australia, the land of the Holy Spirit (the flames) is a land rich in natural beauty with diverse cultures.

As Australians, we are nurtured by the gifts of our ancient land, by our Christian and Aboriginal spiritualities. The Aboriginal colours used in the flames are black for the people, red for the earth and their spiritual relationship with the land, and yellow for the sun, giver of life.

The background colours represent peace, calmness and tranquillity. The gums, depicting our ancient flora and fauna, are full of vibrant rebirth after drought and fire.

As Australians we are united with our Ursuline Sisters throughout the world in weaving Angela’s vision for our broken world, from the Southern Cross in the south, to Ursa Minor in the north. Together we search new paths to lead us into the future with hope.
