World Environment Day 5th June 2019
Theme - Beat Plastic Pollution
Pope Francis’ Encyclical Laudato Si set out a new agenda for a greater understanding of our relationship with each other and with the earth. Francis speaks of the earth as ‘Our Common Home.’ He states that both humanity and the earth have an interdependent relationship and cooperate with each other. Neither humanity nor earth live in isolation from each other.
“We need to strengthen the conviction that we are one single human family.” LS
“We are faced not with two separate crises, one environmental and the other social, but rather with one complex crisis which is both social and environmental.” LS
World environment Day provides an opportunity for us to rethink our relation with each other and mother earth. The challenge this day offers us can be found in the ordinary everyday communication and actions with each other and our environment.
We may well challenge ourselves to act. A few very simple questions could assist us.
What is one way I can reduce my use of plastic this year?
Is my garbage bin full of plastic bags containing my household rubbish? (Strong paper bags are readily found in a variety of stores)
How frequently do I purchase plastic bottled water?
How often do I purchase rolls of plastic wrap? (Other alternative products are available)
Where do I dispose of my plastic materials?
Many simple, practical, quick yet lasting changes to our use of such materials can be employed
The following prayer gives voice to the desire that both humanity and earth live in harmony....
Prayer: Laudato Si
