Young Ursulines Meeting, Rome, 2-9 July 2017

The meeting of 30 young Ursulines from 17 countries was a time to share, to learn, and to experience more of our internationality. The General Council and our Ursuline presenters generously shared their time and their lived experience of Angela's charism as they accompanied us and led us through our days of meeting. The meeting was ably facilitated by Sr Ruth Durick osu, Provincial of Australia.

I will share a little of my experience in this reflection.

One of the things I valued most was the opportunity to meet in small groups, for sharing, and for preparation for liturgy. Working together, from our diverse backgrounds, we experienced also our commonality and a deep respect for each others’ journeys. I felt a shared sense of generosity and openness that transcended our language and cultural differences.

We had one day allocated to voluntary service and our group went to Mensa Giovanni Paolo II, run by Caritas. We spent the majority of our time refilling the water jugs for the tables for the almost 500 people who attended for lunch on a very hot and humid Rome day. It seemed a particularly appropriate task for us as we continued our reflection on the wedding feast at Cana. Our water didn't turn to wine but we aimed to be a welcoming presence to those we served, many of whom were migrants and refugees.

Sr Frances Boston, osu, an Australian Ursuline who spent over 40 years working in Africa was one of the presenters. She provided a wonderful experience of Africa and of a faithful living of theFullSizeRender Gospel and of Angela's charism. We were also moved by the story of an Ursuline Sister from Venezuela and of her commitment to the people of her homeland in the midst of the uncertainty of life there.

We also gathered in our regions and have undertaken to keep in touch, so that our time together will continue to bear fruit. It was a busy and enriching time and I am grateful to have had this opportunity to connect with all those who gathered.
